US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US States House of Representatives for the 8th congressional district of Tennessee for one term, from 1866 until 1867. He attended local schools, then studied medicine at the Philadelphia Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1850. He then moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he engaged in the mercantile business. After the American Civil War, when Tennessee reinstated into congressional representation, he was elected to Congress. In 1867 he was an unsuccessful candidate for re-election and returned to his home in Memphis, where he served as mayor from 1869 until 1870. He contested the election of Republican William J. Smith to the 41st Congress in 1870, but while on his way to Washington to prosecute the contest, he died at the age of 43.
