U.S. Congressman. Born in Woodstock, Virginia, he attended Dickinson College Pennsylvania, (1811-12), Washington College Virginia, (1814-15), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced to practice law at Campbell Courthouse, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1828-30), plus Commonwealth Attorney for Harrison, Lewis and Preston Counties. In 1833, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress, serving until 1835. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was judge of the seventeenth circuit court of Virginia, (1836-40), judge of the Virginia State Supreme Court of appeals, (1840-65) and president of the executive council. After retiring from the court in 1865, he lived in retirement until his death at age 73 at Beaverdam, near Fincastle, Virginia.
