U.S. Congressman. He attended Henry College and was successful in agricultural pursuits. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in the Cavalry Division, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate Army. After the war, he returned to farming and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1869-73). In 1883, he was elected as a Readjuster to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885 and reelected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress, serving (1887-89). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural interests until his death at age 73 in Tazewell, Virginia.
