U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Mississippi, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1883 and commenced to practice in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Moving to Gainesville, Texas, in 1885, he continued the practice of law. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1901. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was elected to the United States Senate, serving (1901-13). After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 66 while conducting procedures in a Sherman, Texas, court room.
