U.S. Congressman. Attending Alexander Collegiate Institute, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1893, commenced practice law in Jacksonville, Texas and was also a licensed Methodist minister. He was judge of the Cherokee County Court, (1898-1901), Mayor of Jacksonville, (1902-05), a member of the Democratic State committee (1908-10) and chairman of the board of education, (1913-18). In 1919, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-sixth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1931. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 70.
