Arnold G. Wood, 82, of Wausau, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Aspirus Hospice House.

He was born in Perkinstown on Dec. 4, 1928, the eldest of six children. He married the former Gertrude Kufahl, in Wausau. Arnie was raised by his grandmother in a one room log cabin. Growing up in the Depression Era, he learned the value of a dollar and the importance of hard work. As a young boy, he moved to Wausau. Arnie married the former Geraldine Lemmer, and together they had 10 children. He was very proud of his family, and worked hard to provide for them.

Arnie drove truck for Milwaukee Road, as well as transporting mail between the post office and the train depot. He had a moment in the spotlight, being featured in the newspaper, delivering the last load of mail to the train depot. Later in life, he was employed by Marathon Box, working part-time until the age of 80.

Arnie enjoyed hunting, fishing, berry picking, and playing guitar. Those who stopped by would find him tinkering in his garage, and would often leave with their car fixed and more car knowledge than they came with.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; children, Darlene Gahnz, Jim (Gigi) Wood, Tom (Barb) Wood, Sue Austin, Jack (Dawn) Wood, Jill Rueger, and Tracy (Todd) Weisenbeck; son-in-law, Ken Kieffer; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Geraldine; and children, Douglas Wood, Sandy Wood, and Barb Kieffer.

Friends and family may call on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Helke Funeral Home, Wausau, beginning at 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Private burial will take place at a later date in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau.
