G. W. Roby was born on July 11, 1817 in Harrison County, [West] Virginia to Thomas S and Sarah (Kelly) Roby. Source: Morrow County, Ohio Vital Records.

The family moved to Perry County, Ohio in 1819 where the mother died in 1831. In 1836 the family moved to Morrow County, Ohio where the father remarried and moved to Wisconsin. George was raised on a farm and received a common school education. He married Nancy Fickle in 1840 who was born April 3, 1813 in Perry County, Ohio, to Benjamin and Rebecca (Dusenbery) Fickle. The couple had four children together:
Rebecca J born Sep 21 1841,

Thomas B born Oct 20, 1844, and
Dortha A born Jul 13, 1845

George's wife, Nancy, died on October 30, 1889 and was buried at Ebenezer Cemetery in Marengo, Morrow County, Ohio. The 1900 US Federal Census Report shows George W Roby living with his daughter; Nellie A (Roby) Coffman; her husband, Thomas Coffman; and her son, Thomas Coffman, Jr., in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma. He also spent time at the home of his son, T. B. Roby, in Alva, and later lived with his daughter, Mrs. Anna Mathews [Dortha Hanna "Anna" (Roby) Matthews], and her family in Vera, Indian Territory, Oklahoma [25 miles south of Bartlesville], where he died February 19, 1907 (Newspapers.com, The Alva Weekly Record, aka Renfrew's Record, Alva, Oklahoma, 8 Mar 1907, p. 9, last column).

It is possible that George was buried at the Alva Municipal Cemetery in Woods County, Oklahoma, where other family members are buried. It is also possible that his remains were sent back to Ohio for interment with his wife at Ebenezer Cemetery in Marengo, Ohio.
