In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1871 and served in the New York State Senate. After leaving politics, he engaged in agricultural and mercantile pursuits until his death at age 68.
