U.S. Congressman. He engaged in agricultural pursuit, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Williamsburg, Kentucky. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, (1861-62) and a Commonwealth Attorney, (1862-70). He served in the Kentucky State Senate, (1875-76)and was appointed by President Grant as United States District Attorney of Kentucky, serving (1876-77) and was judge of the Kentucky fifteenth judicial circuit, serving (1880-86). In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in the coal mining business until his death at age 76.
