Vietnamese religious leader and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of Trac But, he studied at the Seminary of Hanoi, He was ordained on December 8, 1949, and from that year to 1963, he did various tasks of pastoral work in the archdiocese of Hanoi, such as vicar foraneous, vicar delegate and official of the ecclesiastical tribunal. On June 2, 1963, he was consecrated titular archbishop of Ela and appointed coadjutor, with right of succession, of Hanoi, He succeeded to this metropolitan see on November 27, 1978. Paul John Paul II created him cardinal, on June 30, 1979. From October 1 to 30, 1987, he served in Rome as president delegate of the VII Ordinary Assembly for world Synod of Bishops. He passed away in his episcopal city.
