Accidentally drowned in Folkestone harbour.
Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald - Saturday 08 January 1881
Extraordinary Case of Drowning.
An inquest was held at the Town Hall (Folkestone) on Thursday evening on the body of James Winton, aged 33, able seaman in the service of the South-Eastern Railway Company. It appeared by the evidence that the deceased was standing on the forecastle of the steamer Alexandra on Thursday morning about half-past eleven. It was high water in the harbour, and by some means he fell into the water. One witness saw him immediately before falling holding by the fore halyards, waiting for some one to help him pull in a heavy rope.
Mr. Frank Hammond, Deputy Harbour-master, said he heard the cry "Man overboard," and immediately got into a boat and arrived at the spot where where the deceased sank in less than a minute from the time of his falling overboard. The drags were at once procured, but they were unable to recover the body until three-quarters of hour had elapsed.
Jesse Woollaston said he saw deceased lying on his face in the water, and threw a line to him, but he did not move or struggle in any way.
Dr. Bateman said he had examined deceased, and there was nothing in his appearance to indicate he came by his death otherwise than by drowning; he had not had a fit. Witness had known instances of drowning where there had been no movement of the body after being in the water.
The jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally drowned."
