Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 10th New York Volunteer Cavalry, then as Colonel and commander of the 1st New York Provisional Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallantry in action at Sailor’s Creek, Va., and for faithful and meritorious services”.
