U.S. Congressman. He engaged in manufacturing pursuits, was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, (1862-65), moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1866, founded the Griswold Iron Works and was a trustee of Erie Academy. In 1891, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893 and elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving (1895-97). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his manufacturing pursuits until his death at age 85.
