Born May 17, 1926, in Morris, Erwin was the son of George and Helen (Broderick) Durkee. He was educated in Morris schools.
Erwin enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
Nickie married the love of his life, Alberta M. Callaway, on October 8, 1949, at Immaculate Conception Church, Morris.
He was employed with Uniroyal at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Elwood, Caterpillar Tractor Company in Aurora, RCA Job Corp. in Tulsa, Oklahoma and General Electric Corporation in Melbourne, Florida. He retired in 1991, when he and his wife settled in Vancouver, Washington to make their home.
Nickie loved to garden and was very proud of his tomatoes. He constructed his own home and tended to the landscaping.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 62 years, Alberta; their daughters, Marcia (Richard) Abbott of Valencia, California, Gail Durkee of Channahon, Gloria Durkee of Vancouver, Washington and Cynthia (Patrick) Durkee-Murphy of Olympia, Washington ; five grandchildren, Meghann Pierce, Rachel Abbott, Lindsey Pierce, Sarah Abbott and Brandon Pierce; two sisters, Helen (Marvin) Kessler of Coal City and Dorothy (Richard) Blaskie of Channahon; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers, Edward, William, Robert, Donald, George, James and John Durkee.
