C. Hart Merriam practised medicine, 1878-1885, at Locust Grove and was President of Lewis County Medical Society. He established a museum at the Merriam residence called Homewood, specializing in zoology, botany and ethnology and became connected with these branches of natural science with the Smithsonian Institute. He authored several books, including "Mammals of the Adirondacks", Results of the Biological Survey of the San Francisco Mountain Region and Desert of Little Colorado in Arizona".
