St. Bernard, Ala, March 7 Special - the obsequies over the body of the Rev. matthew Thompson, O.S.B. who died recently at the sanitarium at El Paso, Tex, occurred Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the college chapel. The services commmenced witht he solemn chanting of the office of the dead by the fathers of the abbey. At the conclusion the Rt. Rev Bernard Menges, O.S.B. , Abbot, delivered a beautiful address on the life of the deceased. The body was then borne by his confreres to the abbey cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. Boniface, O.S.B. director of the college, assisted by the Revs. Aloysius, O.S.B. and Germain, O.S. B. as assistants.
Monday morning a solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated by the Rev. Aloysius, O.S.B. a classmate of the deceased, assisted by the Revs. Acmilian, O.S.B. and Germanin O.S.B. as deacon and subedeacon respectively.
Father Thompson, O.S.B. was born in Wilmington, N.C. September 2, 1880, and at the age of of five moved with his parents to Birmingham, which he had considered his home ever since. He was a member of St. Paul's Church and the first from the parish to consecrate his life to the service of God in the ranks of the clergy. He studied at St. Bernard College and at the close of his academic career, at the age of twenty-one, joined the Benedictine community by his relgious profession. He was ordained by the holy priesthood by the Rt Rev EP Alen, D.D, Bishop of Mobile, July 6, 1907. For the next few years, Father thompson was employed as a professor English in the college Department. Subsequently he was put in charge of the Catholic church at Florence, Ala but ill health soon forced him to resign. From that time on he failed rapidly until he finally succumbed at the hosptial at El Paso, Tex Wednesday afternoon, March 1. (Note El Paso Times article noted he was at the sanitarium in El Paso for 5 months.)
