U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from the law department of the University of Kentucky, in 1918, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law at Irvine, Kentucky. He was the Irvine City Attorney, (1918-20), plus assisted in organizing the tobacco growers of Kentucky and nearby States into cooperative marketing associations, (1921-23). In 1925, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-ninth and Seventieth Congresses, serving until 1929. He was again elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving (1931-49). After his term, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1949, serving until his death at age 55.
