U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Lovingston, Virginia. He served in the War of 1812, after the war he resumed the practice of law and was a member in the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1829-31). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress and as a Conservative to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, was the Commonwealth attorney for Lynchburg, Virginia, (1849-72) and was judge of the corporation court, (1841-82). He then lived in retirement until his death at age 94.
