US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a student at Roanoke College when he enlisted in the Confederate Army, became a Captain and served in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. After the war, he studied law in the University of Virginia, graduated in 1867, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was Commonwealth attorney of Rockingham County (1870-77) and served in the Virginia State Senate, (1877-80). In 1881, he was elected as a Readjuster Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until he resigned in 1883. He was appointed judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia by President Arthur and served until his death at age 62.
