U.S. Congressman. He attended Pantop’s Academy, Washington and Lee University and taught school at Fishburne Military Academy, (1886-87). He graduated from the law department of the University of Virginia, in 1890, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Charlottesville, Virginia. He served in the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1895-97), was a member of the Virginia State Library Board, (1904-13) and judge of the eighth judicial circuit. (1913-30). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second Congress, serving until 1933. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69.
