Sterling Rodney Scroggins was the first born child of James Samuel Scroggins and Iva Lena McFarland. He was born in a prairie dugout outside of Sterling, Texas.

At age 6 his father put him on a wild mustang and told him to stay on it. He was scared and did fall off. But, his father kept putting him back on those horses until he was able to ride them. Sterling started work on the family farm at an early age. He claimed that he only had a 3rd grade education. That may be true, but he could write amazing letters and ran an Army Surplus Store and Produce Farm later in life.

Sterling was a hardworking man. During his life he was a ranch hand, farmer, WWI Soldier, store owner, husband, father, and grandfather. He put family first.
