  • Burial Avoca, Steuben County, New York, USA
  • Memorial ID 7770269

The story goes, William was taken captive by Indians at the age of 7 or 8, and he returned to his family at about 17, speaking very little English. He was pressed into service aboard an English cargo ship, making the trip to England and back several times before finally jumping ship. In 1794 he built a cabin at the 8 Mile Tree near Bath, NY and founded the town of 8 Mile Tree or Buchanan Town, now Avoca. He married Mary McWhorter, sister of Hugh McWhorter, the town's co-founder. They had 7 children. Unfortunately, his stone is either gone or completely unreadable.
