Harold W. Retchin, 88, passed away Tuesday Oct. 4th. Born in Springfield, he was a resident of Springfield and Longmeadow, until moving to Florida in 1993. Harold was a graduate of the High School of Commerce and had attended Northeastern Univ., the Univ. of North Dakota, and San Marcos State College. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, serving as a photo mapping navigator in China, Burma, and the Philippine Theatre. Harold served as a USAFI officer for 24 combat mapping in India and a budget and fiscal officer for 13th Airforce Manilla in the Philippines. Harold was the owner of Crown Contemporary Furniture on Riverdale Rd. in West Springfield for many years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Jewish Nursing Home, B'nai Brith Young Men, the Mr. & Mrs. Club of the Jewish Nursing Home, the Hump Pilot Assn., the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Pioneer Valley Yacht Club, the Conn. River Improvement Council, a Mason belonging to the Esoteric Lodge, the Melha Temple Shrine, a founder of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Springfield Flotilla and Pioneer Valley Division, AMAR of West Palm Beach, the Boynton Beach Flotilla - Coast Guard, and the Jewish War Veterans Post #26 and Post #440. Harold was a free lance certified navigation instructor, both of the air and marine B-24 Liberator Club. He was well noted for his knowledge of the B-24 aircraft and teaching navigation through the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Harold is survived by his wife Carol of Lake Worth, FL, his three sons Steven of Leeds, MA, Jeffrey of Boca Raton, FL, and Robert of Westfield, his sister Mildred Abrams of Springfield, his one grandchild, and his two great grandchildren. Harold's funeral service will be Friday Oct. 7th at 1:00 PM at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
