Born in Tennessee on January 15, 1811. The middle name "Clusen" is sketchy in early records. Ancestry records reveal Greenberry Cobb was the first born child of Virginian Howell Cobb (b. abt. 1793; d. 1850 - a son of Thomas Cobb) and his implied mother Leah Williams (b. 1795: d. 1850). Other research will vaguely suggest that his father may have been "Rice Cobb" (an older brother to Howell Cobb) but does not seem likely. Should his father in-fact be Howell Cobb, there remains a slight discrepancy with Greenberry being born just three months before Howell and Leah were married. Regardless, there are *clues to suggest that his father was still most probably "Howell" Cobb. (See below)

Greenberry Cobb was first married to Nancy Reynolds on Dec. 12, 1831, Hopkins County, Kentucky. Nancy Reynolds is believed to be born around 1810 and died very young in her early 30's. She may be buried in an unmarked grave near Greenberry's stone. Their children were Albert G.H. Cobb (b. 1836/blind); Eliza Jane Cobb (b. 1838); Catherine Cobb (b. 1838?); Nancy Young Cobb Branson; all half siblings to the children of Greenberry's second wife, Julia Ann Ashby, who became their step mother in July of 1843. Nancy Y. Cobb Branson (b. 1840/pictured below) unfortunately died very young at the age of 37 in 1877.

Julia Ann and Greenberry Cobb had 10 known children: A firstborn child is unknown, John Wesley Cobb, Mary Elizabeth Cobb, Jesse C. Cobb, Sarah L. "Sallie" Cobb, Sydney Anne Cobb, Farmer Greenberry "G.B." Cobb, Henry Howe (H.H; (Howell?)Cobb, George Choice Cobb, James Pell Cobb.

WHO WAS THE FATHER OF GREENBERRY COBB?

Was it Rice Cobb - or was it Howell Cobb?

Recorded dates do show a slight discrepancy with Greenberry being born on January 15, 1811- just prior to Howell and Leah's marriage in April of 1811. Out-of-wedlock births may have been rare, which appears most probably to have been the case with Greenberry's birthdate. * There are however several plausible clues to support his father as being Howell Cobb:

It was most common for pioneer parents to use first and middle names from their previous generations to name their children. Records reveal that Greenberry Cobb was the oldest of (7) siblings. Greenberry's younger brother was a Thomas "Greenberry" Cobb, b.1820; d.1905; FAG Memorial 72820114; buried in Slaughters, KY. - his middle name: "Greenberry" being his brother's first name.

• Thomas Greenberry Cobb named his first born: James "Howell" Cobb , b. 1838; d. 1925; FAG Memorial 72825088; buried in Slaughters, KY. (perhaps named after his grandfather "Howell" Cobb?)

• Thomas Greenberry Cobb also named his youngest daughter: "Julia Ann"; FAG 72918319

(perhaps named after her Uncle Greenberry's wife: Julia Ann Ashby Cobb?)

• Ancestry records reveal that Greenberry's sister was Elizabeth Irvin Cobb Coffman - born in 1813. Her father was "Howell" Cobb and mother being Leah Williams. See FAG Memorial 47344048.

• A son of Greenberry and Julia Ann Ashby Cobb was named (H.H. Cobb) Henry "Howe" Cobb (the phonetic version being "Howell").

In light of these clues, just exactly who were Greenberry's parents? The correct answer is one which I will leave to professional genealogists. However, the aforementioned relationships do support Howell Cobb and Leah Williams.
