Elmer was the oldest child of Ancil Levanges Helms and wife (his distant cousin) Pearl Lily Helms. Originally named Elmer Levanges, which he changed to Elmer Lamar Helms.

Elmer was married twice, and had two sons, Brent and Brian Helms.

His first wife was Athalee Crumpler, they were divorced 19 Feb 1973 in Seminole County, FL.

His second wife was Jane Frisby, they married 15 Aug 1974 in Volusia County, FL.
