U.S. Congressman. After completing preparatory studies, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1830 and commenced to practice law in Hayneville, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, (1834, 36-37) and served in the Alabama State Senate, (1838-41). In 1846, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William L. Yancey, serving until 1847. Moving to Florida, in 1854, he served in the Florida State Senate, (1865-85) and appointed collector of customs at Cedar Keys, Florida, serving until his death at age 77.
