Olive was the only child known to be born to parents, Ernest L and Hattie J Skellenger Thomas of New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. Olive and her mother, Hattie, were noted living in New Haven, CT with her grandparents, Henry and Emily Thomas, in the US Federal Census of 1900; the father, Ernest, is not listed as being part of this family unit. Apparently, the marriage of Ernest and Hattie terminated shortly after this data point and Olive and Hattie removed to Hammond, Lake, IN, to live with her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Jaquette Skellenger and family; she was listed as a member of this family in the 1910 US Federal Census. It is believed Olive remained in Hammond, probably with her grandmother's family, until she married Clarence Alfred Kussmaul in Hammond on 14 Oct 1919 at St Joseph's Church. Olive and Clarence had one child together, Dorothy R, born in Hammond circa 1923. Although Olive and Clarence had their family roots in Hammond, the last data point found was 1948, sometime after that date they removed to, and settled in, Prince George's Co, Maryland. While this relocation is not fully understood at this time, one possible explanation could be they joined their daughter in that area. It should be noted that Olive lived another 22 years following her husband's death. She may have continued to live with her daughter until her death in Louisville, KY. Olive and Clarence lie together in Resurrection Cemetery of Clinton MD.
