Son of Mr. and Mrs. David Williams, they immigrated to America when he was eight years old, locating in Schenectady, NY. At the age of 14 he entered the employ as a clerk. In 1845 he followed the rest of the family, who were then living at Catasauqua, and at once entered the office of the Crane Iron Company. His first duty was to weigh the ore and limestone that was hauled higher by team, to feed three furnaces. Those were busy days for team was followed by team all day long. In 1849 he was promoted to the position of Assistant Cashier; and in 1856 was promoted to the office of Cashier. He performed the duties of this office with fidelity throughout the remainder of his life.

Mr. Williams was an active participant on boards of other large, local businesses. He was a shrewd and pleasing character with the earnest endeavor to promote the welfare of his fellow townsmen. Married to Emma Caroline Heilig, daughter of Rev. George Heilig, a Lutheran clergyman and Susannah Hook. They began housekeeping on Church Street, and later to the "Mansion" on Front Street. Later they erected a beautiful home on Bridge Street, which they lived until their deaths. They were parents of: Lizzie S, Mrs. Frank M Horn, Annie, Mrs. Edward D Boyer, and Messrs. John T and George H Williams. They were members in the First Presbyterian Church and Mr. Williams served as Elder and Superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.
