Joseph Hearst, son of John Hearst and the former Miss Elizabeth Knox, was born in the area around Ballybay in County Antrim, Ireland on the 16th of February 1760. At the age of 4, his parents were part of a group of Scots-Presbyterians that sailed to America with Dr. Thomas Clark; arriving July 1764 into New York aboard the ship "John". While part settled in Salem, New York, Joseph and family emigrated south to the Long Cane area. Around 1771, the Hearst family were charter members of the Long Cane Associate Reformed Church.

During the Revolutionary War, Joseph Hearst was a Private in the South Carolina Militia and later received reimbursement payments from the State of South Carolina for supplies used during the war. *

On June 8th 1784, Joseph Hearst married Jane Pressly, daughter of John and Isabella [née Fleming] Pressly. Her parents had been part of the group of Reform Presbyterians with Rev. William Martin and his five ships that arrived in Charlestown in the fall of 1772 and settling in the same area around Long Cane. This blessed union had six known children:
John Hearst (1787 – 1843)
Elizabeth Knox [Hearst] Pressly (1791 – 1875)
Jane [Hearst] Pressly (1793 – 1873)
Margaret [Hearst] Hearst (1796 – 1856)
Mary [Hearst] Chiles (1798 – 1871)
Isabella [Hearst] Pressly (1806 – 1858)

Joseph Hearst, Sr. was ordained as an elder in both Long Cane & Cedar Springs A. R. P. churches, which his parents helped organize. He departed this life on the 21st of May 1814, at the aged of 54 years old. Joseph is buried near his parents and in-laws in the churchyard cemetery at Cedar Springs. His wife would join him fourteen years later.
