Edward Johnson married Caddo Emily Wilson on 14 February 1877 at Clark County, Arkansas.

Mr. Johnson's first name was given as Edward in a biographical article by his son, but as Edwin on his death certificate. At 23, E.W. Johnson was a deputy sheriff at Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In 1880, he went to Texas and became a deputy Sheriff in Clay County under Sheriff Cooper Wright. E.W. Johnson was active in suppressing fence cutting in the 1880s. For two years, he was Young County Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Ol Brown.

In March 1885, E.W. Johnson was appointed deputy US Marshall and sent to Graham, Texas where he served four years, generally in the western part of Indian Territory. On 29 February 1888, E.W. Johnson lost his right arm in a gun battle with Bob James in Wichita Falls, Texas, but by practice learned to shoot well with his left hand.

In 1916 Johnson moved to Los Angeles, California, and was a deputy sheriff for 15 years there until his death. He was described by his son as a man who "seldom ever joked, but was high-tempered and quick to resent an insult."

The attack on the notorious Marlow Brothers gang inspired the movie, Sons of Katie Elder in 1965.

Edward and Caddo had been married since about 1877 or 23 years of marriage. 11 children had been born to this union, seven were alive. He moved his family to Graham, Texas in 1885.
