US Congressman. At age 14 he enlisted in the 5th Georgia Regiment Confederate Army and served the entire Civil War until the south surrendered. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1869, commenced to practice law in Georgia, moved to Florida in 1879 and continued to practice law. He was a member of the Florida State House of Representatives, (1884-85). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1905. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as register of the US land office at Gainesville, (1914-22) and as Mayor of Gainesville, Georgia, (1924-25).
