Simeon Lemuel Abshire (also spelled Absher) enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 8th Virginia Infantry (US) on October 21, 1861. (On June 20, 1863, the regiment became the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry and in 1864 it was designated the 7th West Virginia Cavalry.) While crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains on July 10, 1862, he was captured by Confederates but was mistakenly listed as a deserter by his regiment. Simeon was exchanged at Aiken's Landing on September 13, 1862, and returned to his regiment on October 13th. He was promoted to the rank of Farrier in early 1864 and also participated in the famed "Salem Raid." He was discharged on August 1, 1865.

Prior to his enlistment in the Army, he belonged to a Unionist militia in Boone County. He stood 6' 2" and was listed as having dark hair, a fair complexion, and blue eyes. Simeon could not read or write and signed his enlistment papers with a simple "x" mark. He was married to Telitha Jane Brimm, the daughter of James and Hannah Brimm. According to a post-war veterans census, he suffered from Rheumatism.
