Bernice Mae Nicholson Atkins, 72, left this life to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

She was born April 11, 1936, in Madison County, the daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Nicholson of Syria, Virginia. She was also predeceased by four sisters and two brothers.

She was a treasured mother, sister, friend, co-worker and companion to many. A life long homemaker and mother, she also worked for many years in the restaurant business and will be missed by all those who were fortunate to have been blessed to know and love her.

She is survived by her children, Mary Nicholson, Nancy Haught, Victoria Thompson, Sherry Rice, Tina Arndt, and Joseph Atkins, as well as their spouses and companions.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angela, Rebecca, Nicole, Maggie, Christal, Adam, Amanda, Stephen, Christy, Rachel, and Kaitlyn; as well as nine great-grandchildren.

She also leaves behind her treasured companion and best friend of many years, Mr. Oscar Dodson of Culpeper, Virginia; her sister, Virginia Bennet of Luray, Virginia; her brother, Aldridge McTandel Nicholson of Seattle, Washington; several nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat, Annie.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison conducted by Chaplin Robert Schultz with interment at Etlan Cemetery along side her beloved parents and family members. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpointe Parkway, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 or to the local SPCA. "She flew up to heaven on the wings of angels by the clouds and stars where no one sees and she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waiting
