John Spencer was born 21 June 1750 to Hannah Gates and Ebenezar Spencer in Haddam, Hartford County, Connecticut, British Colonial America.

On 28 Oct 1772 John married Susanna White (1719–1801) in
East Haddam, Connecticut. Together they had ten children:

In 1776 he was a Revolutionary War Private with Captain Eliphalet Holmes's Company of Minute Men out of Connecticut. By March 1778 John was a Matross and Sergeant in the Muster of Captain Benjamin Pollard.

Gerrard Spencer II was John's first ancestor to immigrate to North America from Stotfold, Bedford, England in 1634. He married a young woman named Hannah and together they had 14 children, at least 13 of which survived to adulthood. They were very prolific.
