Erik Anderson, 85, a lifelong resident of Batavia, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva.

Erik was born February 10, 1918, in Batavia, the son of Oscar and Alma (Ericson) Anderson. He was united in marriage to Jean Philips in Elgin, IL, on June 15, 1946.

Erik served in the United States Navy Construction Battalion during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. After being discharged, he returned home to care for his mother with failing health. He was in his late twenties when his mother and father had both died. Erik's family always came first; being the eldest of seven children, he became a father to his youngest brother, Gary, and sister, Gladys. Erik was a hardworking man and worked days in the foundries and nights as part-time custodian in the Batavia School District. In 1955, Erik took a full-time position at the Batavia High School and several years later, he worked at Grace McWayne until retiring in 1980. Even after retiring, Mr. Anderson continued to work part-time at Alice Gustafson.

Erik was a very active man. He could be found watching high school athletics, gardening in the yard, or playing with his dog. He was also a member of the Boys Club in the Fox Valley which was an important part of his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Barb (Tony) Barajas of Batavia; his son, Ken (Cristy) Anderson of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Matt, Megan, and Molly Anderson, and Nick and Nate Barajas; a brother, Gary (Nancy) Anderson of North Field, IL; a sister, Gladys (Paul) Hemp of Champaign, IL; two sisters-in-law, Emma Lou Anderson of Elgin and Marge Anderson of Ann Arbor, Michigan; a brother-in-law, Warren Philips of Durango, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his parents; and four brothers, Arthur, Carl, Ollie and Jim.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Yurs-Peterson-Moss Funeral Home, 209 South Batavia Ave, Batavia, IL.

Private funeral services will be at 10 AM Friday, August 15, 2003, at the funeral home with Rev. Jeff Fricke officiating. Interment will follow the service at West Batavia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 South Lincoln Street, Batavia, IL, 60510.
