The Rev. R. L. (Rufus Lorn) Robinson, 86, of Jackson, passed away peacefully, with family at his bedside, on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 28, 1925, at Chaonia in Wayne County, Mo., to Ola Pat and Marie Moore Robinson.

He and Virginia Vandyke were married Oct. 26, 1947, and would have celebrated 64 years of marriage in October.

Robinson was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, from Oct. 26, 1944, to Nov. 21, 1946. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, a Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the American Legion in Jackson and the VFW in Chaffee, Mo.

He was a graduate of Poplar Bluff High School. He attended college at Southeast Missouri State University. He subsequently surrendered to the call of ministry and attended seminary at Central Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained at Red Star Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau in August 1948.

In the following order he served as pastor in these Missouri communities: Anniston, Lone Hill, Qulin, Millersville, Stewartsville, Clarkton, Wardell, Chaffee, Hayti, East Prairie, Murphysboro, Ill., and as director of missions of the Cane Creek Stoddard Association in Poplar Bluff, Mo. After retirement, he served as pastor in Pulaski, Ill., interim director of missions in the Southeast Missouri Association, pastored in Chaffee and Vanduser, Mo., and did pulpit supply in various churches.

He was a member of Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson and enjoyed attending Thursday evening services at the Cape County Cowboy Church near Oak Ridge. He served on the board of the Missouri Baptist Home and was active in Promise Keepers in Scott City.

Loving survivors include his wife, Virginia of Jackson; three sons, Ronald Lewis Robinson, M.D., and wife Carol of Cape Girardeau, Daniel Eugene Robinson and wife Ronna of Oceola, Ark., John Patrick Robinson, R.Ph., and wife Laura of Jackson; five grandchildren, Carol Rene Robinson and husband David Sallee, M.D., of Collierville, Tenn, Matthew William Robinson and wife Sarah Masters of Keiser, Ark., Katherin Virginia Robinson of Memphis, Tenn., Ronald Lorn Robinson of Oceola, Ashley Dawn Robinson of Jackson; and three great-grandchildren, Maria Robinson Sallee, Elena Robinson Sallee and Isaac Wayne Robinson.

Also surviving is a brother, Ola Patrick Robinson and wife Lavona of St. Louis; a sister, Mary Ruth Guffey and husband George of St. Louis; an aunt, Evelyn Moore Simpson of Puxico, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond Robinson; and a sister, Alma Freda Robinson.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m., Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dale Rickman officiating and the Revs. Don Estes and Verle Eaker assisting. A graveside committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery on Route W in Butler County, Mo.
