NILES - Milton Omer "MO" Reed, 94 years old, passed away at home at 10:00 PM on Thursday, September 29, 2011. He was 94 years young, born in a log cabin on the Cruickshank ranch in Sturgis Co., Black Hills, South Dakota, on July 2, 1917. Mo was the only child of Lester Loany Reed and Agnes C. Anders. His father returned to Indiana where he was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a boiler man in Elkhart, Indiana. Mo grew up in Bristol, Indiana, moving to Elkhart where he graduated from Elkhart High School in 1935. In March 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He started at Great Lakes Naval Training Center where his father, Lester, had served in 1913. He trained as an Internal Communications Specialist, eventually becoming a Chief. During WW II, his major tour of duty was in the South Pacific, stationed at Perth/Fremantle repairing submarines. He also served during the Korean War, and later held positions at the Reserve Naval Training Centers at South Bend, Indiana, and Jackson, Michigan. Returning to sea duty, he was attached to the USS Fulton, a submarine tender at Groton, Connecticut, where the USS Nautilus was berthed, which was the first nuclear-powered submarine. He was transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1956 where he taught in the Internal Communications (ICA) School. A brief stint was spent on the USS Kittyhawk, the second nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier in the U.S. Navy. Mo retired in 1961 prematurely. owing to a disability problem incurred on active duty. After surgery to repair a damaged hip, he returned to teaching at the same ICA school. He later joined the Civil Service and worked at the ESO at Great Lakes provisioning sonar equipment for the Navy as a Supervisory Inventory Management Specialist. When the ESO was transferred to Pennsylvania, he chose to take an early retirement in 1974. He was married to Gertrude Marie Rough Sept. 15, 1945, in Washington, D.C. She preceded him in death in 1985 in Waukegan, IL. On Dec 23, 1987, he married Helen Rachel McWilliams Walter in Waukegan. Helen died on Feb 17, 2009, in Zion, IL. Survivors include his son, Dr. John R. Reed, D.O., and his wife, Sandy Robbins Reed of Niles, MI. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Carol (Mike) Magden of Waukegan, IL, Gordon (Heidi) Walter of St. Charles, MO, and Gregg (Kathy) Walter of Winthrop Harbor, IL. He has several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. As an ordained Elder he served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent in the Forrestal Village Church at Great Lakes, IL. Later Mo became a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Waukegan, IL, where he served as a Trustee and an Elder. Milton also held membership in Tyrian Masonic Lodge #718 F&AM in Elkhart, IN. Also he was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #702, the Elks Lodge #706, the American Legion Post #281, all in Waukegan, IL. He was a life member in the VFW #7961 in North Chicago, IL, the AARP, and the Fleet Reserve Association, Br 50. The funeral and committal services with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 6th, in the Chapel at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN, with the Rev. James Miller of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 in the chapel. Burial will follow in SJV Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tyrian Masonic Lodge #718 in Elkhart, IN, or to the charity of your choice.
