Major Burdette Raymond Smith, USAF (Ret) was born on a farm in Otho Township a few miles south of Fort Dodge Iowa to William and Elizabeth Smith. He joined the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 397tht Aerial Bombardment Group in Kimbolten, England, where he accomplished 25 missions over Germany and Northern Europe. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Several Air Medals for his courageous service as a gunner and radio operator.
