Julius, as he was then known, emigrated from the village of Ferguson, Kr. Wirsitz, Province Posen, Prussia with his wife in the spring of 1883, embarking on the ship "Bohemia" at the port of Hamburg on 1 April 1883. He and his wife, then five months pregnant with their first child, arrived in New York City on 16 April 1883. The young couple made their way to Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, where they settled and raised their family. Their son, August Frederick Klawitter, was born there on 6 August 1883.
