Allen J. Williams was the son of Duke Williams and Laney (Powell) Williams. He was born 29 March 1835 on his parents plantation along Logmill Road in Yatesville, Upson County, GA. His father was one of the earliest settlers of Upson County and served several terms as a Georgia State Representative. Allen's brother, Julius Caesar Williams was Mayor of Thomaston from 1892 to 1896. Allen Williams served as an officer in the Confederate Army ("Holloway Grays") during the Civil War. He fought in many battles including Murfreesboro TN, Chickamuauga, Missionary Ridge and Atlanta. After returning from the war, he married Mary "Mollie" Persons from Monroe County on 14 November 1865 They had three children, two of whom (Allen and Alma) were twins. Allen served two terms (1886-1889) as a Representative for Upson County in the Georgia General Assembly. He also served as a trustee of the Joseph E. Johnson Institute around 1891. Allen Williams and A.J. yates ran a large fruit nursery along Logtown Road, Yatesville, and introduced the famous Yates Apple. Allen and his wife, Mollie, belonged to the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church near Yatesville. A.J. Williams died 5 February 1920 and his wife died 6 May 1917.
