Death Notice
The News (Frederick, MD) - October 13, 1897

A dispatch from Mansfield, Arkansas, announces the death of Mr. Greenberry Griffith, son of the late Maj. Greenberry Griffith, who was distinguished in the War of 1812 as the commander of the Alexandria, Va., Artillery. Mr. Griffith had resided in the West for a number of yers. He was born in this county [Frederick, MD], November 28, 1838, and was a member of a well known Maryland family.

His father, Major Greenbury Griffith, was born May 20, 1787, and in [1814] married Miss Prudence Jones, daughter of General Charles Jones, of Ireland, who raised an Irish brigade and fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Griffith's grandfather fought for American Independence under General Lafayette, who, when he visited Frederick in 1824, recognized and embraced him.

The family is descended from William Griffith, a planter who came from London, England, and settled on the Severn river in 1675. One year before Nicholas Greenberry and Anne, his wife, had come to America in the ship Constant Friend, bringing with them two children. Nicholas Greenberry took up a tract of land on the north side of the Severn river, at its mouth, now known as the "Greenberry Point Farm," and the two families of Greenberry and Griffith became united by marriage. The Griffith's also intermarried with the Howard, Worthington, Dorsey, Maccubbin, Warfield, and many other well-known Maryland families.

Mr. Griffith's remains will be brought East and interred in the family burying ground in this county.
