ELIZABETHTON STAR - 19JAN1996 - OBITUARIES - AARON C. SAMS
Aaron C. Sams, 82, of Greenwood, SC, died Friday, 19Jan1996, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Sams was a native of Elizabethton & a son of the late Jackson William & Sallie Hyder Sams & stepson of the late Hattie Hyder Sams. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Ruth Meredith Sams, & a step-son, James Hugh Thompson.
Mr. Sams was a former resident of Milligan College. During the 1950's he was elected to two terms as School Commissioner to the Carter Co. Board of Education & was selected to serve as its chairman. He was employed by American Bemberg Corporation in Elizabethton for 24 years & by Chemistrand-Monsanto in Pensacola, FL, & Greenwood, SC, for 22 years.
He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Elizabethton & attended Emerald Baptist Church in Greenwood. He was active in the Sonshiner's group at the church & delivered "Meals on Wheels" for the Piedmont Agency on Aging in Greenwood.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Gladys Sams; 4 sons & daughters-in-law, James William & Annette Sams, Pensacola, FL; Gerald Neal & Sharon Sams, Atlanta, GA; Michael Meredith & Mary Ellen Sams, Pensacola, FL; & Carroll Wayne & Brenda Sams, Greenwood, SC; a daughter, Patricia Ann Escajeda, Jacksonville, FL; 2 brothers & sisters-in-law, Elmer B. & Pearl Sams, Elizabethton; & Winston N. & Virginia Sams, Johnson City; & 2 step-daughters, Ruth Thompson Connor, Greenville, SC; & Norma Carle Thompson, Charlotte, NC. Ten grandchildren, a great-granddaughter & a number of nieces & nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday from the Harley Funeral Home, 1025 S. Main St., Greenwood, SC, (803)229-3300. Graveside services & interment will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels, Piedmont Agency on Aging, 123 Bailey Circle, Greenwood, SC 29646.
