October 25, 1915

Reagan Houston Sr., one of the most prominent attorneys of Southwest Texas, died at his home, 1024 Main avenue, at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, following an illness of two weeks. His family was at his bedside when the end came. A fortnight ago Mr. Houston was stricken with heart trouble at his ranch at Welfare, Tex., and soon after, in a critical condition, was brought to his home. He sank rapidly, his death having been expected for the last three or four days. Mr. Houston would have been 57 years old October 30. Before his recent attack he was apparently in the best of health and led an active business life.
Mr. Houston was born on the Houston planation on the Cibolo river, in Wilson County, October 30, 1858. His fahter was the late Dr. G. J. Houston, one of the pioneet physicians of this section, who was well known throughout Texas both for his medical work and for bravery in the civil war.
Mr. Houston received his education in the public schools of San Antonio and later was graducated in law from the Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tenn. Here he studied under Chancellor Nathan Green and after his graduation married Miss Martha Green, the daughter of his tutor.
Upon his return to San Antonio he engaged in business with his brother-in-law, the late Col. Thomas C. Frost, later going into the practice of law with his brother, the late Augustus W. Houston. Houston Brothers continued one of the leading law firms of San Antonio until dissolved several years ago. Regan Houston, the senior partner, and his son, Reagan Houston Jr., practicing under the firm name of Reagan Houston & Son.
Because of Mr. Houston's former connection with the Traction Company, all street cars in the city were stopped for five minutes Monday afternoon at the funeral hour.
Reagan Houston was the last of four sons, Augustus W. Houston, Bryan Houston and Joseph Houston having all died in the course of recent years. A. W. Houston, who died in February of this year, was also a prominent lawyer and a Mason of high rank.
Mr. Houston is survived by his widow; seven sons, Grey, Reagan, Edwin, Grafton, Bruce and Maclean Houston, and two daughters, Mrs. T. W. Holliday, wife of Captain Holliday of the United States Army, and Miss Martha Houston; two sisters, Mrs. R. B. Minor, wife of Judge R. B. Minor; and Mrs. Josephine Frost.
The funeral was held from the home at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon and was largely attended. Services at the home and at the grave were in charge of the Ft. Rev. James S. Johnston, Episcopal bishop of the West Texas diocese. Bishop Johnston eulogized Mr. Houston's character and paid high tribute to his life work. A long line of automoblies followed the body of Mr. Houston to the grave in Mission burial park. The pallbearers were: W. D. Tuttle, Albert Maverick, W. C. Rigsby, J. L. Browne, Leroy G. Denman and George Thomson.
