He enlisted in the Army on March 5, 1941, prior to the war, in Trenton, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as being Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" on Leyte during the war.

He had served in the Army for three years and eight months at the time of his death and was decorated with a Purple Heart.
