U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Delaware, in 1924, then president-owner of a retail business in Dover, Delaware, commissioner of Delaware State College, (1936-41) and on the Delaware Old Age Welfare Commission, (1938-44). During World War II, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army, (1944-46). After the war, he was the president of Kent General Hospital, (1947-51). In 1949, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate,serving until 1961. After leaving the Senate he was on the Securities and Exchange Commission, (1961-63) and resumed former business pursuits until his death at age 89.
