Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Captain in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in the 5th Battery, Maine Light Artillery for action on September 22, 1864 at Fisher's Hill, Virginia. His citation reads "While acting as assistant adjutant general, Artillery Brigade, 6th Army Corps, went over the enemy's works, mounted, with the assaulting column, to gain quicker possession of the guns and to turn them upon the enemy. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1869. He became an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Harvard Medical School and was connected with the Massachusetts General Hospital for forty years.
