Eleanor K. Ploeger died on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Essentia Health in Sandstone. She was 91 years old.
Eleanor was born in Winslow, Ill. to William and Leone Rote. She attended elementary school in Lena, Ill. and graduated from high school in Elkton, Minn. in 1937. She completed teachers training in 1938 from Austin Normal School in Austin, Minn. She taught in one room schools at Bear Creek, Danforth and Pine City. On Feb. 22, 1941 she was united in marriage to John Ploeger in Sandstone.
Her family enjoyed her cooking, baking, sewing and her many hand sewn quilts. She enjoyed her Bible study groups each week. She loved to read and passed that love on to her children. She also enjoyed the opportunity to travel and visiting her daughters in other states. Eleanor traveled to Belgium with daughter Barbara and sister-in-law Vi Johnsen to visit her daughter Loretta and her family. She also visited Holland, Germany and Paris.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband John Ploeger; her parents; her brothers Bill Rote and Edgar Rote; her sister Esther Rote and sister-in-law Arids Rote.
She is survived by her son Larry of Pine City; daughters Linda Athey of Moose Lake, Loretta (Charles) Sprado of Sandstone, Barbara Ekberg of Brunswick, Ga., Kathy (Don) MacWilliam of Shelton, Wash., Patty (Scott) Howell of Hotchkiss, Colo., grandchildren Jim Athey, David (Kathleen) Athey, Amy (Eric) Prose, Andy (Heidi) Sprado, Maria Eckberg, Jeremy Ekberg and Ashley MacWilliam; great-grandchildren Brody, Vanessa and Alexa Athey, Amanda Oelker, Abby and Charlie Sprado, Ella and Grace Prose; great-great-grandchildren MacKenzie and Madison Corder and Bentley Athey; brother John Rote of Hinckley; sisters Harriet Marks of St. Paul, Edna Petersen of Askov, Doris (Doug) VonBusch of Proctor, and sister-in-law Lorraine Rote of Askov.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. at the Sandstone Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Chris Cundiff officiating. Organist was Katie Cundiff. Casketbearers were Andy Sprado, Jim Athey, Larry Ploeger, Eric Prose, Don MacWilliam and Chuck Sprado. Interment at Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone, Minn. Arrangements by Methven Funeral Home, Sandstone.
