Clarence was the eldest of three children born to Franz "Frank" Herman Arndt and Anna Paulsen Arndt. His siblings were Florence Mae and Benjamin Franklin "Benny" Arndt.

1910 was a horrible year for the Arndt family as Clarence's father, Frank, at 32 years old, had just passed away on January 11th from consumption (tuberculosis).

Then, on May 5th, Clarence's little brother Benny passed away at 2:00 in the afternoon from whooping cough that was complicated by bronchitis; only a few days before Benny's second birthday. To make it even more poignant, Benny passed away the day before Clarence's 6th birthday. What a tragic year for this little family.

Anna Arndt, 32, was left to raise Clarence, 6, and Florence, 4, with the help of her parents, although the little family was broken up and boarded out at different times. Anna remained single the rest of her life.

Since Benny's father, Frank, had just passed away in January, the 1910 Census shows Anna and her children, Clarence, Florence and Benny living with Ole (59) and Johannah (63) Paulsen, Anna's parents. They were living on Staffon Street in Ludington. Ole's or Anna's nephew, Ole Nesseth (26) was living with them as well and working as a laborer for a cement company. The elder Ole was working as a laborer in a coal company.

At this writing in 2013, the entire family is now all together again, buried in the Arndt plot at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington, Michigan.
