Mr. Johnston was born on Saturday, August 10, 1929 in Belle Rive, Illinois the son of the late Evan Lee, Sr. and Coy Dare (Kniffen) Johnston. He married Judith Ellen Humphrey on June 7, 1953 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and she preceded him in death on May 15, 2000.
Evan served in the U.S. Army from August 1948 to December 1950 during the occupation of Germany following World War II and later was grounds foreman and maintenance supervisor at Mt. Vernon Outland Airport for 16 years and he was a member of Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon and the Masons.
Surviving family members include his son: Stephen Kent Johnston of Pinckneyville, Illinois; 3 daughters: Frances Ellen Robinson and husband Dennis of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Karalee Houle and husband Gary of Mt. Vernon, Illinois and Dorothy "Dottie" Harris and husband Bruce of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; half-brother: Melvin E. Quinn and wife Audrey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; half-sister: Frances Irene Wilkey of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His parents, wife, one granddaughter: Amy Ellen Rumsey, one grandson: Nathaniel Sneddon and one brother: James Russell "Jimmy" Johnston preceded him in death.
GRAVESIDE MEMORIAL SERVICES: were held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Kirk Cemetery in Ina, Illinois. Reverend Chuck Wheeler officiated.
INTERMENT: Kirk Cemetery in Ina, Illinois. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 conducted Full Military Honors at the cemetery.
