U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile and banking pursuits, he was town clerk of Lenox, New York, (1867-69) and Sheriff of Madison County, (1873-75, 79-81). He also was a member of the Canastota Board of Education in 1883 and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was president of the Canastota Northern Railroad Company, (1893-1905), receiver of the Hudson River Power Company, (1908-12) and president of the State Bank of Canastota, New York, in 1912.
